Eco-Committee Christmas Card Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we approach the Festive period, we have begun to think about the small ways in which we can reduce the environmental waste that this season brings. This year, St. Bede’s Catholic Junior School has decided to be more eco-friendly and reduce any unnecessary waste.

We create around 30% more waste than usual during the festive period; this has an enormous impact on our planet. Each year, around one billion Christmas cards are sold in the UK alone. Many of these Christmas cards cannot even be recycled. Any card which has glitter, glue, is over-printed in foil or a 3D image cannot be recycled. This creates a vast amount of unrecyclable paper.

With this in mind, we kindly ask that if children wish to send Christmas cards, they only bring in one Christmas card for their class on Friday 13th December. These can be displayed in class for everyone to see.  The school staff have never sent one and other Christmas cards; instead they donate £5.00 ( approximate amount spent on cards per person) to a local charity.  The Eco-Committee believe that reducing the amount of non-recyclable cards as a school is evidence of us living out our mission and Pope Francis' encyclical letter 'Laudato Si'

Thank you for your support in making our school more eco-friendly this Christmas
