Mr. Stalker - Subject Leader
Mr. Stalker is the Subject Leader for PE and Sport.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching and love the diversity of school life - no two days are ever the same! I love teaching PE because I get to be involved in Sports Day and sports clubs after school allowing the children to develop their sporting skills further.
PE Statement of Intent
At St Bede’s Catholic Junior School, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long-term, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with high-quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging, and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport.
I have been fortunate to lead the subject of PE at St. Bede’s for over 7 years now and, during that time, our curriculum has evolved considerably.
In the summer term of 2024, we were awarded the Association for Physical Education (AfPE) Quality Mark for our provision in PE. To achieve this award, all aspects of our curriculum were examined by an AfPE assessor, including teaching and learning in PE, leadership of the subject and how we enhance learning beyond the classroom for our children.
The curriculum at St Bede’s Catholic Junior School is underpinned by our faith in the Gospel values and Catholic Social Teaching. As such, we agree with Pepe Francis’ message from 2018 that: “Every occasion is good for announcing Christ’s message” And that, “sports can open the way to Christ in those places or environments where it is not possible to announce Him directly. It is a very rich source of values and virtues that help us to become better people, training, practicing, discovering our limits without fear.”
AIMS
At St Bede’s, we want all children to enjoy studying an engaging, empowering, inspiring and challenging PE curriculum that develops their understanding of sport. Also, through sport we can learn important life skills like leadership, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. Sport is important to us because it helps us to build our friendships and create a sense of shared identity – the idea of togetherness.
Sport, therefore, helps us to live out the words in our school mission statement: that we may celebrate life, life in all its fullness. At St Bede’s, sport is not just about developing technical skills and abilities. We learn about what it means to be an athlete. We aim to become good sportspeople through our attitude and conduct.
We aim for children to:
To promote a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle by developing self-motivation to take part in physical activity outside school as recreation:
- by developing a positive attitude and interest in a wide range of physical activities;
- by raising awareness of issues regarding health-related fitness.
To contribute to the physical development of each child:
- size, strength, fitness, speed, gross and fine motor skills.
To contribute to the intellectual development of each child:
- aesthetic appreciation and understanding of Dance and Gymnastics.
To help establish the individual child's self-esteem and confidence. To develop social skills through:
- co-operating in groups; playing fairly to rules; mixing with children from other schools.
To ensure that every class includes Level 1 competition (competition within the school) at the end of every unit of work.
To ensure every child has the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular sports clubs, as well as external competitions.
It is a real pleasure to lead the subject of PE at St. Bede’s. Our pupils (and teachers!) are so enthusiastic about their learning and we have many, many knowledgeable and skilled young athletes amongst our school community.
